Flow is coral “respiration” and housekeeping
Many SPS and high-energy corals thrive when flow keeps tissue clean, improves gas exchange, and prevents detritus from settling on plugs. Too little flow can lead to algae on bases, poor extension, and slow encrusting.
What “good flow” looks like
- Broad, varied movement (not a constant blast)
- No dead spots under racks
- Enough motion to keep detritus suspended for export
How to build a high-flow zone
- Angle pumps to create cross-current
- Use multiple smaller sources vs one “jet”
- Adjust slowly and watch polyp response
Gear that makes flow easier
Reliable pumps and smart placement are the backbone of a clean frag system.
