Reef chemistry is mostly about stability
You don’t need to chase perfect numbers every day. You need consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium so corals can build skeleton and recover from normal stress.
What each one does (simple)
- Alkalinity (Alk): supports coral growth and pH stability
- Calcium (Ca): building block for skeleton
- Magnesium (Mg): helps keep calcium/alk stable and usable
The #1 beginner mistake
Making big corrections too fast. In reefing, fast swings cause more damage than slightly “off” numbers.
Build a weekly testing rhythm
- Test Alk more frequently in growing tanks
- Test Ca/Mg weekly (or as needed)
- Log results so you can see trends
