Fish selection in a reef tank is not the same as in a freshwater community. The wrong species will eat your corals, harass other fish, or both. Here are the reef-safe species that work for beginners.

Best Reef-Safe Beginner Fish

Ocellaris Clownfish — reef-safe, hardy, and among the most recognizable fish in the world. A bonded pair in 20+ gallons is the classic reef starter setup. Blue-Green Chromis — schooling, bulletproof, peaceful. Keep at least five or six. Stunning in the midwater column. Royal Gramma — brilliant purple-to-yellow bicolor, reef-safe, peaceful. Shy at first, bold over time. Firefish Gobies — elegant with a flame-colored posterior. Use a tight-fitting lid; dedicated jumpers. Tailspot Blenny — algae grazers with huge personality, reef-safe, compatible with nearly all peaceful species. Watchman Gobies — sand sifters that create burrows; fascinating behavior, reef-safe.

Fish to Avoid

Triggerfish, most pufferfish, larger angelfish, and groupers are not appropriate for beginner reef tanks. Add fish slowly — most peaceful species first, more assertive species last.
