Nano aquariums — tanks 2.5 to 10 gallons — offer an intensely personal, detail-oriented experience. A well-executed nano tank is often more visually striking than a 75-gallon community. Done right, it is living art. The key: they are less forgiving than large tanks and require appropriate species and consistent care.
Best Nano Species
Freshwater Shrimp — Cherry shrimp and neocaridina color morphs are the perfect nano inhabitants. Colorful, fascinating, and they eat algae. A colony of 20–30 in a planted five-gallon tank is spectacular. Chili Rasboras — brilliant red micro-fish under half an inch; keep groups of 15+. Pygmy Corydoras — social bottom dwellers under one inch. Nerite Snails — excellent algae cleaners that cannot reproduce in freshwater.
Equipment and Maintenance
Use a sponge filter powered by an air pump — gentle flow, excellent biological filtration, safe for shrimp. Perform small frequent water changes (10–20% twice weekly).
