Goldfish can live 10–15 years. They grow up to 12 inches. They are intelligent and will recognize you. The goldfish bowl is a welfare disaster — no filtration, inadequate oxygen, no space. Here is what goldfish actually need.
Tank Size and Filtration
Fancy goldfish minimum: 20 gallons per fish. Common goldfish and comets need 40–75 gallons or an outdoor pond. Goldfish are among the highest waste-producing freshwater fish — use filtration rated for two to three times your tank volume. Weekly 25–30% water changes are essential.
Water Parameters
Temperature 65–72°F (cold-water fish — no heater needed in most homes). pH 7.0–8.0. Zero ammonia, zero nitrite, nitrate under 40 ppm. Cycle the tank for four weeks before adding fish.
Substrate and Plants
Use fine sand or smooth rounded gravel — goldfish are diggers. For live plants, choose fast-growing anacharis and hornwort, or tougher java fern and anubias that goldfish tend to avoid.
