Dinos often show up when the tank is stripped too hard
Dinoflagellates can appear as brown snotty strings, bubbles, and fast regrowth. Many reefers see dinos after aggressive nutrient removal—when nitrate and phosphate bottom out and the system loses balance.
Common “dino setup” patterns
- Nutrients driven to near-zero
- Overuse of aggressive filtration/media
- Big swings from rapid changes
- New tank instability
A smarter recovery mindset
- Stop the yo-yo: avoid rapid changes
- Test nitrate/phosphate and aim for stability
- Improve export consistency (not extremes)
- Increase biodiversity where appropriate

Flow + filtration note
Strong, consistent flow helps prevent detritus pockets and reduces the “fuel” that feeds outbreaks.
