Testing is how you prevent “mystery problems”
Most reef crashes aren’t sudden—they’re slow drifts you didn’t see. A simple testing routine helps you catch trends early and make smaller, safer adjustments.
The core tests (most reefs)
- Salinity
- Temperature
- Alkalinity
- Nitrate
- Phosphate
Secondary tests (as needed)
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- pH (helpful, not always required)
A realistic schedule
- 2–3x/week: Alk (especially in growing tanks)
- Weekly: nitrate/phosphate
- Weekly/biweekly: calcium/magnesium
Make it easy to stick with
- Test on the same days
- Log results (notes beat memory)
- Change one thing at a time
