Aquatic Turtle Filtration: Why Standard Tank Filters Don't Cut It
The Problem With Turtle Waste
A 10-inch red-eared slider generates a biological load that would crash a comparably-sized fish tank within days. The filters commonly marketed alongside starter turtle kits are sized for fish. They are woefully insufficient for any adult aquatic turtle.
What Adequate Filtration Looks Like
A canister filter rated for two to three times the actual volume of the tank. If running a 75-gallon setup, filter for 150-225 gallons. Canister filters outperform every other filter type for turtles in both efficiency and maintenance interval.
Biological Filtration
The nitrogen cycle converts toxic ammonia into nitrate. The beneficial bacteria that perform this conversion colonize your filter media. Clean filter media in old tank water, never tap water, and replace only one type of media at a time.
Water Changes Remain Essential
Good filtration reduces how often you need to change water — it does not eliminate the need. A 25-30% water change weekly removes accumulated nitrates. The basking dock must be fully above the waterline and completely dry to the touch.
