Feeding Axolotls

Nightcrawlers: The Best Staple Food

Earthworms — specifically nightcrawlers — are the single best food for axolotls. Nutritionally complete, widely available at bait shops, accepted readily by virtually all axolotls, and produce minimal water fouling. Nightcrawlers can and should form the bulk of the adult diet.

Hikari Axolotl Pellets

One of the few commercially formulated pellets worth using for this species. It sinks, softens appropriately, and provides a nutritionally balanced alternative. Use tong or hand feeding to place pellets directly in front of the axolotl.

Frozen Bloodworms for Variety

Frozen and thawed bloodworm cubes add variety. Thaw in cold tank water and remove any uneaten portions after 20 minutes.

What to Avoid

  • Feeder fish — carry parasites; goldfish contain thiaminase
  • Waxworms and superworms — too high in fat for regular use
  • Scatter feeding — allows decomposition and ammonia spikes

Feeding Frequency

Juveniles under 4 inches: daily. Adults: every 2-3 days. A healthy adult should be slightly rounded but never visibly bloated after feeding.
