Parrot Diet Guide: Building Complete Nutrition for Long-Lived Companion Birds
The Pellet Foundation
High-quality species-appropriate pellets should make up 50-60% of a parrot's diet. Look for whole-food ingredient lists, no artificial colors, and size appropriate for your bird. Browse our bird food and pellet collection for species and size-appropriate formulations for all parrot types.
Fresh Food: 20-30% of Daily Intake
Dark leafy greens, sweet potato, bell pepper, and cooked legumes deliver vitamins and minerals pellets alone cannot fully cover. African greys are particularly prone to calcium deficiency — emphasize dark leafy greens and consider a species-appropriate supplement.
Seeds, Nuts, and Treats
Seeds should make up no more than 10-15% of diet; nuts no more than 5-10%, as high-value training rewards. Avoid avocado, onion, garlic, chocolate, and any food with xylitol — these are toxic to parrots.
