Blue Tongue Skink Care

Why Blue Tongues Work

Large enough to handle comfortably, intelligent enough to recognize their keepers, calm once socialized, and hardy. A 4x2-foot enclosure minimum for a single adult. Use a loose, diggable substrate at least 4-6 inches deep so they can burrow. Provide warm and cool hides.

Lighting and Temperature

  • UVB: T5 HO 10.0 UVB tube — required
  • Basking spot: 100-105°F
  • Warm ambient: 85-90°F
  • Cool side: 75-80°F

Taming

Young blue tongue skinks are often defensive. Hissing, puffing, and tongue-flashing are common in juveniles — this is almost entirely a bluff. With consistent daily handling of 10-15 minutes, most settle dramatically within 2-4 weeks and become genuine lap lizards.
