Blue Tongue Skink Diet: Protein, Vegetables, and the 50/40/10 Rule
Omnivore Diet Framework
50% protein, 40% vegetables, 10% fruit. A reliable, well-tested foundation that mirrors what blue tongue skinks eat in the wild.
Protein
- High-quality canned dog or cat food: meat as first ingredient, low sodium, no onion or garlic
- Cooked chicken or turkey: plain, boneless, no seasoning
- Snails: nutritionally excellent — canned snails in water, not brine
- Hard-boiled egg: good occasional variety
Vegetables
Butternut squash, collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, green beans, bell peppers, and shredded carrot all work well. Avoid spinach (binds calcium), avocado (toxic), rhubarb (toxic), and iceberg lettuce (no nutritional value).
Calcium Every Feeding
Dust every meal with plain calcium powder. Blue tongue skinks have high calcium demands. Supplemental dusting at every feeding keeps metabolic bone disease off the table entirely.
