What Box Turtles Eat

True Omnivores

Box turtles need genuinely balanced protein and plant matter in roughly equal proportions.

Protein Sources

  • Earthworms — the gold standard; nutritionally complete, readily accepted
  • Slugs and snails — excellent when collected from pesticide-free areas
  • Dubia roaches and crickets — good feeders; gut-load with leafy greens before offering
  • Cooked lean chicken or turkey — acceptable in moderation; never seasoned or raw

Plant Matter

  • Collard greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens
  • Berries — strawberries, raspberries, blueberries in small quantities
  • Cooked squash and sweet potato
  • Shredded carrot and bell pepper for vitamins

What to avoid: high-fat foods, avocado (toxic), excess fruit. Dust food with calcium supplement 2-3 times per week.
