What Box Turtles Eat: Protein, Vegetables, and the Variety Rule
True Omnivores
Box turtles need genuinely balanced protein and plant matter in roughly equal proportions.
Protein Sources
- Earthworms — the gold standard; nutritionally complete, readily accepted
- Slugs and snails — excellent when collected from pesticide-free areas
- Dubia roaches and crickets — good feeders; gut-load with leafy greens before offering
- Cooked lean chicken or turkey — acceptable in moderation; never seasoned or raw
Plant Matter
- Collard greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens
- Berries — strawberries, raspberries, blueberries in small quantities
- Cooked squash and sweet potato
- Shredded carrot and bell pepper for vitamins
What to avoid: high-fat foods, avocado (toxic), excess fruit. Dust food with calcium supplement 2-3 times per week.
