Arboreal With Real Space Needs
Chinese water dragons need a tall enclosure — minimum 4 feet, ideally 6 feet for adults. They require 80-90% humidity, a pool for soaking (not optional), and UVB lighting. Snout rubbing against glass is a major stress indicator — use a front-opening or mesh-front enclosure.
Temperature and UVB
Basking spot: 90-95°F. Ambient: low-to-mid 80s. Cool retreat: upper 70s. UVB: T5 HO across the enclosure, replaced every 6 months.
The Glass Wall Problem
Dragons in glass enclosures frequently see their own reflection and interpret it as a rival — spending hours pressing their snouts against the glass. This causes chronic stress, snout damage, and compromised immunity. Switch to a front-opening enclosure with a mesh front to eliminate the reflection entirely.
Dense Planting
Dense planting gives your dragon visual barriers, hiding spots, and a sense of security. Use non-toxic live plants like pothos, hibiscus, or ficus. A dragon that feels exposed is a dragon that stays stressed.
