Feeding Corn Snakes: Prey Size, Feeding Frequency, and Getting Stubborn Eaters to Eat
Reliable Feeders
Corn snakes are known as reliable, enthusiastic feeders. Feed them correctly from the start and you'll rarely deal with the prolonged hunger strikes that make ball python keeping more challenging.
Prey and Sizing
Frozen-thawed mice are the standard at all life stages. The prey should be roughly the same width as the widest point of your snake's body. Thaw completely in sealed bag in warm water. Warm prey to approximately 100°F before offering. Use tongs rather than fingers. Leave in the enclosure for about 30 minutes — if not taken, remove it.
Feeding Frequency
Hatchlings and juveniles: every 7-10 days. Adults: every 14 days.
Getting Stubborn Eaters to Eat
- Scent the prey by rubbing it against a feeder lizard or small piece of tuna
- Try feeding in a small brown paper bag in the dark
- Offer prey at dusk or after dark when corn snakes are naturally more active
- Reduce handling for 1-2 weeks before the feeding attempt
