The ABG Substrate Mix
The Atlanta Botanical Garden substrate mix is the standard for dart frog vivariums. The formula blends long-fiber sphagnum moss, tree fern fiber, orchid bark (fine grade), peat moss or coconut coir, and charcoal. This mix retains moisture without waterlogging and supports springtail and isopod cleanup crews.

- Bromeliads — especially small Neoregelia and Tillandsia species
- Ficus pumila (creeping fig) for background coverage
- Pothos and Epipremnum varieties for ground coverage
- Peperomia species for layered coverage
- Mosses for ground-level moisture retention
Cleanup Crew
Tropical springtails and isopods consume mold, fungi, dead plant matter, and fecal waste — preventing bacterial buildup without constant manual cleaning. Establish the cleanup crew before introducing frogs.
Cork Bark and Background
Cork bark panels for the back and sides provide climbing surfaces and insulation for humidity. A well-built dart frog vivarium typically runs for years with only minor maintenance.
