Feeding Fire-Bellied Toads: Insects, Variety, and Supplementation
Primary Feeder: Small Crickets
Small crickets — sized no larger than the width of the toad's head — are the most practical primary feeder. Gut-load for 24-48 hours before feeding using dark leafy greens, carrots, sweet potato, and a commercial gut-load formula.
Variety Feeders
- Fruit flies for juveniles and small adult toads
- Small waxworms offered once or twice monthly as treats only
- Small dubia roaches as an alternative to crickets
Calcium and D3 Supplementation
Dust feeders with calcium plus D3 every other feeding. At remaining feedings, plain calcium carbonate is sufficient. Fire-bellied toads kept without UVB exposure need reliable supplemental D3 to support calcium metabolism.
Feeding Schedule
Feed juveniles daily. Adults 3-4 times per week. Remove any uneaten feeders within 30-60 minutes of feeding — crickets in a humid paludarium create rapid bacterial problems.
