Fire-Bellied Toad Care: The Colorful, Hardy Beginner Amphibian
Small, Tough, and Brilliantly Colored
Fire-bellied toads are one of the most accessible entry points into amphibian keeping. Small (2-2.5 inches), inexpensive, widely available as captive-bred animals, and genuinely hardy. Their distinctive green or brown dorsal surface with a vivid orange-red and black patterned belly makes them striking beginner amphibians.
Temperature: Room Temperature Often Works
Fire-bellied toads prefer 65-75°F — within the range of a typical climate-controlled home. No heat lamp needed in most households. Sustained temperatures above 80°F cause heat stress; above 85°F can be fatal.
Social Housing
Unlike many amphibians, fire-bellied toads do well in small groups. Two to four individuals in a 20-gallon long tank is comfortable and more interesting to observe than a single individual. Do not mix with other species — their mild skin toxins may affect other amphibians.
Warning Coloration Display
When threatened, fire-bellied toads perform an unken reflex — arching their back and displaying their brightly colored belly. If you see it regularly during handling, work on shorter, gentler sessions to reduce stress.
