Fire-Bellied Toad Paludarium Setup: Land, Water, and the Balance Between Them
Starting With the Right Tank
A 20-gallon long tank is the standard starting point for 2-3 adult fire-bellied toads. Horizontal footprint matters more than height — these are terrestrial and aquatic animals, not climbers.
Dividing Land and Water
An egg crate divider bent into an L-shape and siliconed to the tank sides creates a firm barrier supporting substrate on one side and water on the other. A sloped cork bark ramp extending from the water section to the land section allows natural movement between zones. Ensure the toads can easily exit the water — a section with no easy exit is a drowning hazard.
Water Section
Maintain water at 4-6 inches deep with a gentle sponge filter. Change 25-30% of the water weekly. Use dechlorinated or filtered water — fire-bellied toads absorb water through their skin and tap water chemicals affect them directly.
Land Section and Misting
The land section substrate should be moist — coconut coir mixed with organic topsoil works well. Live plants contribute to ambient humidity and improve biological stability. Mist the enclosure once or twice daily to maintain 70-80% humidity.
