Building the Best Gerbil Home: Tank Setup, Bedding Depth, and Enrichment
Tank Size: 20 Gallons Per Pair, Minimum
A 20-gallon glass tank is the minimum floor space for two gerbils. If you have room for a 40-gallon tank, use it — more space means more natural behavior, better burrowing, and healthier, more active animals. Whatever tank you choose, it needs a secure mesh lid. Gerbils are fast, curious, and highly motivated to explore. A loose or poorly fitting lid is a real escape risk.
Substrate: Mix It for Best Results
A single substrate type won't give you the best outcome. Gerbils build more stable, realistic tunnels from a blended substrate. A good combination is:
- Peat moss — provides the moisture and structure needed for tunnels to hold their shape
- Timothy hay — adds reinforcement and nesting material inside burrows
- Paper-based bedding — adds bulk and absorbs moisture
Mix these together and fill the enclosure to at least six inches of depth — eight to ten inches is better in most of the tank. Less than six inches and your gerbils can't build real tunnels, which defeats the purpose of a deep-substrate setup entirely.
Hideouts and Surface Enrichment
Even with a deep burrowing substrate, gerbils benefit from surface-level hides and enrichment. Wooden hides, cork logs, and cardboard tubes all work well. Gerbils will chew and rearrange these over time — that's expected and healthy. A gerbil-rearranged enclosure is a gerbil actively engaging with its environment. Don't stress about the enclosure looking tidy.
The Sand Bath
Gerbils use sand baths to clean and condition their coats. The correct material is fine chinchilla dust — the same volcanic dust product used for chinchillas. Regular sand is too coarse and can irritate eyes and respiratory systems. Offer the sand bath in a container wide enough for your gerbils to roll in freely, two to three times per week. Remove the container after 20 to 30 minutes to prevent dust buildup in the enclosure.
The Wheel Question
A wheel is optional for gerbils but provides genuine exercise benefit. If you include one, use a solid-surface wheel only — never barred or mesh. Barred wheels cause foot and tail injuries. A six-to-eight-inch solid wheel is appropriate for a standard pair. Not all gerbils take to wheels, but many do, particularly during nighttime activity periods.
Foraging Enrichment
Scatter a portion of your gerbils' daily food through the substrate rather than always placing it in a bowl. This engages their natural foraging instincts and keeps them mentally active throughout the day. You can also hide small food pieces in paper tubes or under objects to encourage problem-solving. These small enrichment habits make a meaningful difference in long-term wellbeing for animals that are wired to search and explore.
