Feeding Green Iguanas

Strict Herbivores — No Exceptions

Green iguanas are strict herbivores. Their digestive system is designed to ferment plant matter, not process animal protein. Feeding protein to a green iguana causes cumulative kidney damage that leads to early death.

Staple Greens

  • Collard greens — excellent calcium-to-phosphorus ratio
  • Mustard greens — nutritionally solid, usually eaten readily
  • Dandelion greens — high in calcium and vitamins
  • Endive and escarole — good calcium content
  • Turnip greens — nutritious addition to the rotation

What to Absolutely Avoid

Spinach contains oxalates that bind calcium — never as a staple. Animal protein in any form — dog food, cat food, cooked chicken, insects — causes direct kidney damage. There is no safe amount to offer regularly. Calcium powder should be dusted on food at every single feeding.
