Hermit Crabs Are Omnivores — Feed Like It

In the wild, hermit crabs are scavengers and opportunistic omnivores that eat decaying wood, leaf litter, fruit, fungus, animal protein, and minerals from soil and shells. The uniform pellet diet sold with most starter kits is to hermit crabs what fast food every day would be to a human — technically sustaining, actually depleting. Real hermit crab feeding uses variety as the foundation.

What to Feed

Protein sources: Plain cooked chicken, shrimp, fish, freeze-dried shrimp, dried mealworms, scrambled egg. Offer 2-3 times per week. Protein is critical for exoskeleton development, especially post-molt.

Fruits and vegetables: Mango, papaya, coconut, apple, grape, leafy greens, sweet potato, squash, zucchini. These deliver vitamins, natural sugars for energy, and water content. Organic is preferred — pesticide residues on conventional produce accumulate in small invertebrates. Browse our critter food and supplement collection for freeze-dried fruits and vegetables appropriate for hermit crabs.

Calcium sources: Cuttlebone, crushed oyster shell, dried eggshell, coral sand. Calcium is essential for exoskeleton and shell health — make it available at all times, not just as an occasional supplement.

Whole grains and nuts: Unsalted, unroasted nuts (walnut, almond, peanut in small amounts), oats, rice. These provide complex carbohydrates and fats that hermit crabs utilize.

Bark and wood: Dried cholla wood, cork bark, untreated wood. Hermit crabs gnaw wood as part of their natural foraging behavior — this is normal and beneficial.

What to Avoid

Any food containing salt, preservatives, artificial flavors, or colors. Citrus fruits (the acidity disrupts the digestive process). Avocado (toxic). Onion and garlic. Any food treated with pesticides or herbicides. The commercial "hermit crab food" sold in pet stores often contains ethoxyquin (a preservative linked to health problems) — check labels carefully or avoid commercial pellets entirely in favor of fresh and whole foods.

Water and Feeding Together

Place fresh and salt water dishes large enough for full submersion, and offer food in a separate dish that you clean daily. Hermit crabs are nocturnal and most active at night — offer fresh food in the evening for best results.
