Feeding Pac-Man Frogs: Prey Size, Frequency, and Avoiding Obesity
The Species Most Likely to Overeat
Pac-Man frogs are voracious and indiscriminate. Obesity is one of the most common health problems in captive Pac-Man frogs, causing organ compression, impaired mobility, and immune dysfunction.
Prey Size: Match It to the Frog
Prey should be no wider than the frog's head — this is the maximum safe size. Prey too large causes impaction, prolapse, and choking.
What to Feed
- Crickets — readily available, gut-loadable; dust with calcium at every feeding
- Dubia roaches — excellent nutrition profile, lower in fat
- Nightcrawler earthworms — nutritionally complete, a particularly good choice for routine feeding
- Feeder fish — appropriate for variety occasionally; avoid goldfish (thiaminase)
Dust prey items with a phosphorus-free calcium supplement at every single feeding without exception.
Feeding Frequency
Juvenile frogs under 3 inches: every other day. Adults: once or twice per week only. An adult fed daily will become obese within months.
