Pac-Man Frog Care: The World's Most Sedentary and Most Satisfying Frog
A Frog That Doesn't Ask Much
The Pac-Man frog is one of the most beginner-friendly amphibians in the hobby. Get the setup right once and the frog largely takes care of itself. A Pac-Man frog is an ambush predator — it sits buried in leaf litter, waiting. It does not roam, explore, or require enrichment the way an active amphibian does.
Substrate and Humidity
Pac-Man frogs spend most of their time half-buried in substrate. Moist coconut fiber (coir) is the standard choice. Keep the substrate moist throughout, not wet. Humidity: 60-70%, maintained through regular misting. A shallow water dish wide enough for the frog to soak in should be available at all times.
Temperature
Optimal: 75-80°F during the day, dropping no lower than 70°F at night. An under-tank heat mat on one side paired with a thermostat maintains this range. Temps above 85°F cause heat stress; below 65°F suppresses immune function and digestion.
Handling
Young Pac-Man frogs will bite. With consistent, calm handling, most settle within weeks. Always wash your hands before and after every handling session — the frog absorbs compounds through its skin.
