Pac-Man Frog Estivation: When Your Frog Goes Into a Crust and What To Do
Don't Panic
If you find your Pac-Man frog encased in a dry, papery cocoon — what you're looking at is estivation. A survival mechanism that's completely normal under certain conditions, and completely reversible if you respond correctly.
What Estivation Is
When a Pac-Man frog experiences conditions that feel like its environment is drying up, it encases itself in layers of shed skin that harden into a moisture-retaining cocoon. Inside, the frog's metabolism slows dramatically. It is not dead. It is waiting.
Common Triggers in Captivity
- Substrate that dried out — the most common cause
- Extended period without food — frogs may estivate as energy conservation
- Temperature drops below 65°F
How to Wake the Frog Safely
Do not forcibly remove the cocoon. Place the cocooned frog in shallow lukewarm water (75-78°F). Most Pac-Man frogs begin absorbing water through the cocoon within minutes and break out within 30-60 minutes. After emergence, give the frog 24 hours to recover before offering food.
If the frog does not respond to a lukewarm soak within 48 hours, contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
