Think Like a Puppy First
Walk through your home at puppy level before they arrive. Get low. Look at what a curious, unsupervised puppy might do with the world around them. Everything is chewable. Everything is interesting.
Electrical Cords and Hidden Hazards
Electrical cords are one of the most serious hazards in any home. A puppy that chews through a live cord can suffer severe burns or electrical shock. Tuck cords behind furniture, use cord covers, or apply bitter apple spray. Treat every cord like the hazard it is.
Toxic Plants and Household Chemicals
- Common toxic plants: pothos, lilies, philodendron, and sago palm — move them or remove them
- Cleaning products under sinks — use childproof latches or move them up high
- Antifreeze in the garage — extremely toxic, deceptively sweet-smelling
- Medications on counters or in purses — even a single ibuprofen tablet can cause kidney failure
Puppy Zones and the Crate
A properly introduced crate is not punishment. It is a safe, predictable space where your puppy can rest without getting into trouble. Designate puppy-approved areas and gate off the rest. When you can't watch them directly, the crate is the right answer.
