Cage Size: The Commercial Compromise

Almost every commercial hamster cage sold in pet stores is too small. Roborovski and dwarf hamsters do better in slightly smaller spaces but still far exceed the dimensions of most commercial cages. The Wheel: Non-Negotiable

Hamsters run 5-10 miles per night in the wild. A quality exercise wheel is not optional enrichment — it is a health necessity. For Syrian hamsters, the wheel must be at least 10-11 inches in diameter (an 8-inch wheel forces the back to arch, causing spinal damage over time). For dwarf hamsters, 8 inches minimum. Substrate Depth: The Burrowing Requirement

Commercial hamster seed mixes are high in fat and sugar and nutritionally incomplete as a sole diet.
