Rabbit Care Essentials: Diet, Space, and the Setup That Keeps Rabbits Healthy
Diet: Hay Is the Foundation
Unlimited timothy hay must be the foundation of every adult rabbit's diet — not pellets, not treats. Hay provides the constant fiber needed for healthy gut motility and prevents GI stasis, a life-threatening emergency. Browse our small animal food collection for premium timothy hay, plain pellets, and healthy treat options.
Space: Rabbits Are Not Cage Animals
A rabbit in a small cage is a stressed rabbit. Rabbits need access to an exercise pen of at least 4'x4' or free-roam access to a rabbit-proofed room for several hours daily. Cover all electrical cords — rabbits chew them immediately and fatally.
Social Needs and Enrichment
Rabbits do best in bonded pairs. Cardboard boxes to chew and hide in, tunnels, willow toys, and foraging activities prevent destructive boredom. Spay or neuter for health and temperament — unspayed females have extremely high rates of uterine cancer.
