Small Breed Dog Health: The Conditions Your Tiny Dog Is More Prone To
Dental Disease
The most common health issue in small breed dogs and one of the most frequently undertreated. Overcrowded teeth create the perfect environment for periodontal disease, which is painful, progressive, and linked to systemic organ damage.
Luxating Patella
A kneecap that slips out of its normal groove — extremely common in small breeds. You may notice your dog suddenly holding up a rear leg for a few steps, then putting it back down and trotting along normally. Mild cases can be managed with weight control and joint support. Severe cases may require surgical correction.
Tracheal Collapse
The trachea can weaken and partially collapse in small breed dogs, particularly Yorkies, Pomeranians, and Chihuahuas. The signature sound is a harsh, honking cough, often triggered by excitement or pulling on a leash. This is why a harness is strongly recommended over a collar for small breeds — collar pressure against the throat can worsen tracheal collapse over time.
Cushing's Disease and Hypoglycemia
Cushing's disease is more common in small breeds — particularly Poodles, Dachshunds, and Beagles. Signs include increased thirst and urination, a pot-bellied appearance, hair loss, and lethargy. Annual bloodwork after age six helps catch it early. Hypoglycemia is a separate risk in tiny breeds — know the signs and keep your vet's number handy.
