Feeding Tortoises

High Fiber, Low Protein

Tortoise digestive systems evolved around dry, fibrous grasses and weeds. Feeding a tortoise like a salad bar animal leads to kidney disease, shell pyramiding, and a shortened life.

Dry Grass Hay: Always Available

Orchard grass hay, timothy hay, and meadow hay should be available at all times. This is the nutritional foundation. Hay provides coarse fiber that keeps gut motility healthy and prevents the protein overload that damages kidneys.

Leafy Greens and Weeds

  • Dandelion greens and flowers — excellent calcium-to-phosphorus ratio
  • Collard greens — high calcium, low oxalate
  • Clover — a natural tortoise forage plant
  • Endive and escarole — good nutrition profiles

What Never Goes in the Bowl

  • Fruit — sugar disrupts gut bacteria and contributes to kidney stress
  • Protein sources — not appropriate for herbivorous tortoises
  • Spinach and beet greens — high oxalate content binds calcium

Dust food lightly with calcium supplement at every feeding. Fresh water in a shallow dish daily.
