Tortoises are lifelong commitments. Russian tortoises live 40-60 years. Hermann's regularly hit 80. Sulcatas can reach 100 years and 150 pounds.
The Three Species You'll Actually Encounter
- Russian tortoise — small, hardy, cold-tolerant, excellent for beginners. Tops out 8-10 inches.
- Hermann's tortoise — beautiful shell patterning, does well in Mediterranean-style climates.
- Sulcata — grows large fast. Adults need outdoor space.
UVB Is Non-Negotiable
Outdoor time in natural sunlight is ideal whenever temperatures permit. Indoors, use a T5 HO 10.0 UVB bulb. Replace every 12 months even if it still produces visible light.
Substrate for Natural Behavior
Tortoises dig — provide a substrate mix of topsoil and play sand, at least 4-6 inches deep. Tile, paper towel, and reptile carpet deny the tortoise its most natural behavior and should be avoided as long-term substrates.
