Feeding Tree Frogs: Insects, Gut-Loading, and Supplementation
Three-Part Nutrition System
Tree frogs stay healthy through appropriate feeder selection, proper gut-loading, and consistent supplementation. Neglect any and nutrition suffers over time.
Staple Feeders
Crickets are the most common staple — nutritionally solid when gut-loaded. Dubia roaches are an excellent alternative: higher in protein, easier to gut-load. Mealworms occasionally for variety in adults; waxworms are strictly a treat.
Gut-Loading
Gut-load insects for 24-48 hours before feeding with dark leafy greens, carrots, sweet potato, and commercial gut-load products. A properly gut-loaded cricket is substantially more nutritious than an empty one.
Supplementation
Dust feeders with calcium plus D3 at every feeding for juveniles. Adults: calcium plus D3 every other feeding, plain calcium at remaining feedings. Juveniles eat every other day. Adults eat 2-3 times per week. Remove uneaten insects within 1-2 hours of feeding.
