Feeding Uromastyx

Seeds and Legumes: The Core Staple

Dry seeds and lentils form a nutritionally important part of the uromastyx diet that many keepers miss by defaulting entirely to fresh greens.

  • Millet — a favorite for most uromastyx
  • Lentils — dry, uncooked; highly nutritious
  • Chia seeds — high in omega fatty acids, in moderation
  • Sesame seeds — good nutritional profile, use in rotation
  • Avoid sunflower and safflower as staples — too high in fat

Dark Leafy Greens

Fresh dark leafy greens should be offered daily alongside the seed mix. Collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, and turnip greens are all excellent choices. Avoid spinach, any fruit, and no insects or animal protein.

No Water Dish Required

Uromastyx kidneys are adapted for extreme aridity. They extract moisture efficiently from their food. Fresh greens in the daily diet provide adequate moisture.
