Calathea 'Dottie'

Some plants whisper. The Calathea Dottie commands the room. With its deep, almost black-green leaves dramatically outlined in vivid fuchsia pink and backed by rich purple undersides, this is a plant that makes people stop and stare. It's bold, it's theatrical, and it's unlike anything else you'll find in the houseplant world. If you've been looking for a plant that truly makes a statement, your search ends here.

Native to the lush rainforests of South America, the Calathea Dottie is part of the celebrated "prayer plant" family — named for the way its leaves gently rise and fold in the evening, as if in prayer, then open again with the morning light. This daily ritual is one of the most enchanting things about owning a Calathea — a living reminder that your plant is breathing, responding, and very much alive.

Available in your choice of pot style, so you can find the perfect pairing for your space.

💡 Care Guide

👍 Light: Bright to medium indirect light is ideal. The Calathea Dottie is one of the more adaptable low-light plants — it will tolerate shadier spots, though its colors are most vivid in bright, indirect light. Note: leaf colors will shift under different lighting environments — this is completely normal and part of what makes each plant unique. Avoid direct sunlight, which will fade the stunning pink markings.

💧 Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry. Calatheas are sensitive to the minerals in tap water — for best results, use filtered water, rainwater, or let tap water sit overnight before watering. Yellow leaves are often a sign of overwatering; brown leaf edges typically indicate low humidity or mineral buildup.

🌱 Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture — a blend of quality potting mix, perlite, and coco coir works beautifully. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot while keeping the roots consistently hydrated.

💨 Humidity: This is where the Calathea Dottie truly shines — it loves humidity. Aim for 50–70% relative humidity. Bathrooms and kitchens are naturally ideal spots. A humidifier nearby, a pebble tray with water, or regular misting will keep the leaves lush and the edges crisp. Dry air is the #1 cause of brown leaf tips in Calatheas.

🌡️ Temperature: Thrives in warm, stable temperatures of 65–85°F (18–29°C). Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and sudden temperature changes — Calatheas are sensitive to cold and will show stress quickly.

🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause tip burn. Do not fertilize in fall and winter when growth slows.

🪴 Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots begin to circle the bottom of the pot. Choose a pot just 1–2 inches larger — Calatheas prefer to be slightly snug in their containers.

🐾 Pet Safety

Great news for pet owners — the Calathea Dottie is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it one of the safest and most beautiful choices for pet-friendly homes. Explore our full pet-friendly plant collection for more safe options.

Shipped in your chosen pot size and style. As a living product, slight variations in leaf count, size, and color intensity are natural and expected. Each plant is unique!
