Feeding is species-specific—but the principles are consistent
Reptiles and amphibians have very different diets depending on species, age, and metabolism. But most feeding problems come from one of two things: overfeeding or under-planning.
The natural-first feeding principles
- Match diet to species (insects, greens, whole prey, etc.)
- Prioritize quality over “random variety”
- Use a routine (schedule beats guessing)
- Support hydration (water bowls, misting, soaks as appropriate)
The #1 mistake: feeding on human emotion
Many new owners feed too often because they want to “do more.” Reptiles often do better with a structured schedule.
Supplements note
Calcium and vitamin support can matter a lot—especially for growing animals and UVB-dependent species. Always follow species-appropriate guidance.
